Annual Report: 2007 (Online Version)

Background

Encouraged by the proceedings of two national conferences on master’s psychology in 1990 and 1994 which emphasized the need to organize appropriate recognition for individuals with masters degrees in applied psychology and the need for training programs to have the benefits of accreditation available to them, MPAC developed and implemented a voluntary accreditation process for applied masters programs in psychology in the fall of 1995 (then known as IBAMPP). Adopting the training standards developed by the Council of Applied Masters Programs in Psychology (CAMPP) and refined at these two national conferences, the Accreditation Manual was first distributed in October of 1995 to programs inquiring about the accreditation process. In November of 1995 the Council approved its first pre-application form, which is the Council's formal acknowledgment to a program’s eligibility to apply for accreditation. The Council received the first completed self-study and application for accreditation in November of 1996, and that program became the first MPAC-accredited program in April of 1997. Each year since that time, MPAC has reviewed several additional programs. Most recently revised in December 2006, the current edition of the Accreditation Manual reflects the most recent accreditation standards and is available to any interested program. In addition to the review of applications for accreditation, MPAC has participated in the Third National Conference on Masters Psychology (2000) and other venues where quality standards in applied psychology are addressed.

Current Status of Accreditations

MPAC has accredited nineteen masters programs in psychology from a total of eighteen universities.  In 2007 two programs received full 10-year accreditations.  Three additional programs submitted complete application for accreditation in 2007.  Site visits were conducted at two of these programs in late 2007 and a site visit for the third is slated for early 2008.  Several more programs have active pre-applications.  It is the Council's policy not to identify programs in the process of applying for accreditation, but currently accredited programs are listed below.

Current Status and Plans for the Future

The Masters in Psychology Accreditation Council achieved an important milestone in 2007.  In 1997, for the first time, MPAC began to accredit psychology masters programs.  Because the initial full 10-year accreditation periods ended in 2007, for the first time in its history MPAC began the process of re-accreditation.  During 2007, one program received its initial full 10-year MPAC accreditation and a second program was re-accredited for a period of 10 years.  Three more MPAC-accredited programs submitted complete applications for re-accreditation in 2007 and are currently under review.   The continued financial viability of MPAC was apparent in 2007; the Council maintained a stable financial account balance throughout the year.

In 2008 the Council will continue to review additional applications for initial accreditation as well as re-accreditation.  The Council will continue its pursuit of national recognition as an accrediting body for applied psychology at the master’s level.  To this end, plans are being developed to enhance the Council’s organizational structure and to revise the organization’s policies and procedures.

Current Council Membership

Charles Spirrison, Chair (term expires in June 2010)
Kevin Peterson, Secretary (term expires in June 2008)
Brooks Wright, Public Member & Treasurer (term expires in June 2009)

During calendar year 2007 Patricia O’Connor continued her service as Executive Director.  David Green was elected to the Council to complete the term of Michael Mahoney, who had resigned.  In June 2007, Robert Feuer completed his second consecutive three-year term with MPAC.  His departure left a vacancy on the Council that was filled with the election of Virginia King.  Also in June 2007, Charles Spirrison was re-elected to the Council.

Financial Status

MPAC is an independent, self-sustaining, non-profit organization.  Council Members and the Executive Director serve on a volunteer basis without remuneration.  MPAC’s operating budget is fully financed by accreditation fees.  The Council’s end of the year balance was $5,802.88.

Respectfully submitted,

Charles L. Spirrison, Ph.D.
